Story Of Women
Life under Nazi occupied France is the subject of this outstanding political drama, based on a true story, about Marie (Isabelle Huppert), an impoverished woman who distances herself from her husband and children when she begins performing abortions on French women impregnated by German soldiers in order to make money. Every frame of director Claude Chabrol’s rich character study is informed by the dire social conditions that accompany Marie’s decent into corruption. As Marie rents out rooms in her new apartment to prostitutes, she imagines that her well appointed lifestyle would support her ambitions to become a professional singer. Huppert's performance is riveting under Chabrol's keen direction.
