Ashes and Diamonds (Classic Film Pick)
Based
on the 1948 novel by Jerzy Andrzejewski, the story takes place on May
8, 1945, the last day of WWII in Europe when two members of Poland's
nationalistic underground Home Army aim to overthrow the New Communist
District Secretary. Actor Zbigniew Cybulski came to be known as the
James Dean of Poland for the character of Maciek assigned to
assassinate the insurgent Communist leader. "Ashes and Diamonds"
finished Wadja's war film trilogy with a flourish. Beautifully filmed
and percolating with the futility of violence "Ashes and Diamonds" is a
treasure of Polish cinema from a master filmmaker.
