Dead Kennedys Furious With Heineken Over Un-Authorized Use of Music to Promote Beer
As recently reported by NME, The Guardian, AOL Spinner, NY Press, and a host of other news agencies, Heineken was forced to remove an advert which features a cover of the Dead Kennedys' 'Too Drunk To Fuck' because of complaints it would encourage binge drinking. Heineken had used the song in a commercial tie-in to promote its beer in banner advertisements broadcast via the popular music website Spotify.
Spotify had been running a series of banner advertisements, which directed users to a special "lounge style" playlist as part of a campaign for the beer Kronenbourg 1664.
One of the tracks used was the Dead Kennedys' 'Too Drunk To Fuck', which attracted a number of complaints to the independent industry watchdog, The Portman Group. The complaints were then investigated and were found to be in breach of a rule which bans advertisers from "encouraging irresponsible or immoderate drinking".
Dead Kennedys emphatically deny that they ever gave Heineken permission to use the song. The band's attorneys have contacted Heineken to address the un-authorized use. Dead Kennedys have never authorized any company to use this song or any of the band's songs to promote a consumer product (let alone the consumption of alcohol) in this or any advertisement.

Polk Theater in Nashville. This annual concert and auction will kick

the 2010 Country Music Festival!

become one of the most coveted events
during Country Music Week, this year’s artists participating include
Rodney
Crowell, Chely Wright, Justin
Moore, Bucky Covington, Sarah Buxton and Jann Arden. More artists will
be
announced soon!
Created by
Country Music Star, Chely Wright, the evening will feature acoustic and
band
performances as well as live auctions on stage and a silent auction.

Elvis Costello literally builds a band in front of the audience's eyes
and ears. Joining him for this once-in-a-lifetime jam session are his
former record producer, Nick Lowe, on bass; legendary New Orleans
producer/pianist Allen Toussaint; U.K. guitar giant/songwriter Richard Thompson; and, from The Band, drummer Levon Helm.
In honor of a second season of "Spectacle: Elvis Costello with..." (on IFC), I present here the master's list of his Top 500 Albums (extracted from his piece for Vanity Fair at the turn of the millennium). The equally prolific, songwriter, musicologist, composer, and collaborator returns with the most enjoyable music program I've ever seen. (Remember David Sanborn's "Night Music"?--that was okay.)
Elvis Costello is an elder statesman for music, and his easily articulated wisdom comes across with an honesty and sincerity that compensates for his daunting encyclopedic vocabulary of musical theory, styles, and performers.
There is a lot of fine music here, all of which is worth checking out. Personally, I would much rather have seen Warren Zevon albums take the place of Neil Young. I would also have liked to see some Jim Carroll, Nouvelle Vague, Ramones, Cramps and, dare I say Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. Leaving out Joe Pass with Ella is a sin. But we're all guilty of those. Here's wishing many more seasons of "Spectacle."
