LA GRAND BOUFFE (THE BIG FEAST) 2.0

LGB WHITEBig changes are afoot on LA GRANDE BOUFFE (THE BIG FEAST). Episode #100 will post on Friday (April 27), marking the end of Mike's tenure on the podcast with Bill Gunn's criminally unseen PERSONAL PROBLEMS.

As the old con says in THE GRIFTERS, "You take a partner, you put an apple on your head and hand the other guy a shotgun." Thus, I'll be taking on recording and editing duties to host each new episode with a different surprise guest, and beer, every week. My debut guest for LA GRANDE BOUFFE 2.0 is sure to knock your socks off — a woman filmmaker from Amman, Jordan who grew up in Beirut.

I can't tell you more except to say that THE BIG FEAST is about to get a whole lot bigger. After all, "copiously consuming international politics and culture through the prism of a single film and a different craft beer every week" is the name of the game. Gotta run. The meat truck just pulled up.

LAST TANGO IN PARIS — BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI

Mike broke out Wavy Tropics Guava Pale Ale from Kills Boro Brewing for our discussion of Bertolucci's LAST TANGO IN PARIS even if we had planned to do Lars von Trier's MANDERLAY for this, our 99th episode. Check out my silent shout-out to THE STRYPES if you go to ColeSmithey.com. Bon appetite!

PORTRAIT OF JASON — SHIRLEY CLARKE

Cole and Mike dig Shirley Clarke's magnificent cinéma vérité work which showcases a gay black Mark Twain of African American experience up to this film's 1967 filming. Left Hand Brewing Milk Stout Nitro gave us the craft beer delight we desired for our movie chat. Bon appetite!

IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES — Nagisa Oshima

Smuttynose Imperial Stout gives Cole and Mike the liquid foundation needed to discuss one of the most legendary and notorious films of Japanese Cinema. Non-simulated sex. You bet. You'll need a full set of utensils for this feast, so get out your forks, spoons, and the sharpest knives you can find — you'll know why. Bon appetite Bouffers.

VIVRE SA VIE — JEAN LUC GODARD

Jean-Luc Godard's fourth film features Godard's wife-at-the-time Anna Karina as an actress-turned-prostitute in this ground breaking example of the French New Wave. Stone Delicious IPA seemed like the perfect beer to go along with this equally attractive film.

GOING PLACES — BERTRAND BLIER

Even the grandest of Bouffers are gonna have a hard time swallowing this 1974 nihilist sexual assault romp with Gérard Depardieu and Miou-Miou. An interesting but uncomfortable look at the French post-new wave sex revolution through the story of two sociopaths on a endless road trip to satisfying their desires.
