Quirky for its own sake, "Mister Foe" is an opaque attempt at a coming-of-age-via-modified-incest story.
The story follows malcontent Hallam (Jamie Bell) after the suspicious death of his mother lands another woman (Claire Forlani) in his filthy rich father's bed.
Young Hallum has a go at his step mom in his tree house before taking off for Edinburgh where he sees Kate (Sophia Myles), a lookalike model of his biological mom in her prime.
Hallum follows Kate to the hotel where she works.
After getting a job at the hotel as a dishwasher, Hallum stalks Kate's apartment and strikes up a romantic relationship with her.
Boring, meandering, and painfully self-important, "Mister Foe" is writer/director David Mackenzie's follow-up to his better effort "Young Adam" (2003).
(Magnolia Pictures) Rated R. 95 mins.
