If suffering through an ill-tempered, misery-loves-company movie about Bernie (Gregg Sulkin), a 12-year-old British Jewish boy attempting to plan his own bar mitzvah, scheduled to coincide with the World Cup Soccer tournament of 1966, sounds like a good way to spend an hour and a half, think again.
Director Paul Weiland ("Made of Honor") co-wrote the tone-deaf screenplay for this cinematic abortion that features the ever-lousy Stephen Rea adding his specific brand of stench to a pasted-together movie that is predictable and boring as it is depressing.
The trouble is that Gregg Sulkin gives a fine performance that gets completely tilled over.
Rated PG-13. 95 mins.
