British con man Alan Conway transposed his gay lifestyle into a carousel of money bilking exploits during the ‘90s when he passed himself off as Stanley Kubrick, to the chagrin of many a stung victim.
Writer Anthony Frewin (personal researcher to Stanley Kubrick for many years) and director Brian Cook (assistant director to Kubrick on several films) team up to create a jaunty comedy of manners about Conway’s devil-may-care methods of deceit.
An appropriately cast John Malkovich chews up accents and scenery over a series of increasingly daring con jobs that eventually bring the swindler down.
It’s a truffle of a movie that may leave you feeling like you ate one too many purple chocolates, but secondary performances by Honor Blackman (remember the original “Avengers”) and the ever-kooky Ken Russell add texture to the comic motif.
Not Rated. 87 mins.
