As happens, from time I get approached by publications seeking to purchase my work. But the email I received from Peter Westwood at the upstart daily New Jersey paper The Garden State Journal is a new breed of animal entirely.
As you can see from the actual text of the email, the Garden Sate Journal is only too happy to trumpet their staff of paid right-wing contributors. They're also quick to announce their complete lack of editorial integrity.
What I find most hilarious is how they rub the prospective writer's nose that the unpaid "intern" film writers will be appearing opposite the ostensibly paid Kurt Loder, whose right-wing leanings and measly 538 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes evidently secure him a paid position as the paper's main film critic. I was told at a holiday party by a friend of his that Loder self-identifies as a libertarian.
I suppose they'd have to pay me six times what they're paying Kurt since I've written six times as many film reviews as he has. There is of course the chance that none of their writers are being paid anything, in favor of toiling for "massive exposure and prestige." One thing's for certain, I've never written for free and am not about to start now.
This is an example of the way greedy Republican bastards are attempting to feed their bully pulpit with free content. It's also another example of the ongoing war against writers who must stand up to these assholes and demand payment for their time and skilled work. Of course their business model is doomed because they will end up with unreadable content.
Here's the actual text of the email. Bon appetite.
New Jersey's new DAILY newspaper (one of only 9 in the state) is seeking two film critics, as it wants film reviews in the newspaper multiple times weekly. Currently, Kurt Loder (formerly from Rolling Stone) provides the film reviews for the newspaper. The new critics will be in addition to Loder. The reviews will be published in the print version of the newspaper and online, giving the reviewer massive exposure and prestige.
GARDEN STATE JOURNAL has several of the nation's leading columnists including Bill O'Reilly, Ann Coulter, John Stossel, Susan Estridge, Michelle Malkin, Lawrence Kudlow, Andrew Napolitano, Alexander Cockburn, Jim Hightower, Pat Buchanan, and many others. The new film critic positions are for ambitious, talented writers–this is an intern position with no monetary compensation. The compensation is having your reviews published in a daily newspaper. If you are interested, please get in touch ASAP by REPLY EMAIL, as we are filling these positions immediately.
