FOCUS ON CANNES 2019: LITIGANTE —FRANCO LOLLI

"Litigante" opens the Semaine de la Critique (Critics' Week).

Franco Lolli

"Colombian director, screenwriter and producer, Franco Lolli graduated from the prestigious cinema school of La Fémis in France, before making short films like Como todo el mundo (Grand Jury Prize, Clermont-Ferrand 2007) and Rodri(selected at Directors' Fortnight, Cannes 2012). His first feature, Gente de bien, was presented at La Semaine de la Critique in 2014, before being selected in more than seventy international festivals. His second feature film Litigante will open the 58th Semaine de la Critique."

FOCUS ON CANNES 2019: BACURAU —Juliano Dornelles, Kleber Mendonça Filho

“A few years from now…Bacurau, a small town in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants notice that their community has vanished from most maps.”

"Bacurau" will screen in the Official Competition. This year's jury is led by Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu.

Kleber Mendonça Filho

Kleber Mendonça Filho returns to Cannes since screening his well-received film "Aquarius" in 2016. The Brazilian filmmaker teams up with Juliano Dornelles to co-direct "Bacurau." This one looks to be a crowd-pleaser right out the gate.

Along the Atlantic coast, a soon-to-be-inaugurated futuristic tower looms over a suburb of Dakar. Ada, 17, is in love with  Souleiman, a young construction worker. But she has been promised to another man. One night, Souleiman and his co-workers leave the country by sea, in hope of a better future. A few days after the departure of the boys, a fire devastates Ada’s wedding party, while a mysterious fever starts to spread. Could Souleiman be back for Ada?

Mati Diop

French-Senegalese actress/writer/director Mati Diop screens her debut premiere feature in Competition with "Antlantics." 

Mati Diop is the daughter of Senegalese jazz musician Wasis Diop, and niece to the late,  Senegalese filmmaker, actor, orator, composer and poet Djibril Diop Mambéty (see films, “Touki Bouki” and “Hyènes”). Diop starred opposite Alex Descas in  Claire Denis’s “35 Shots of Rum.”
