Russian auteur Kirill Serebrennokov returns to Cannes behind his 2016 Un Certain Regard entry "The Student," with an ostensibly more humorous, albeit black sense of humor. "Petrov's Flu" could be catching on the Croisette for its celebrated premiere at Cannes.

SPOTLIGHT ON CANNES 2012: IN COMPETITION — FRANCE —Bruno Dumont

Screen Shot 2021-06-22 at 6.39.10 PMIN COMPETITION

FRANCE

France

""France" chronicles the frenetic life of a famous TV star and journalist who becomes caught in the trappings of celebrity and subsequently overcome by a spiral of events which ultimately lead to her downfall. Determined to leave her tragic identity behind her, she redeems herself through hard work and finds her way back to her former life; though this time she’s equipped with a sense of irony and ridicule."

Cannes regular Bruno Dumont returns with the latest addition to an impressive oeuvre of challenging transgressive films. It would be a mistake to underestimate the power of Dumont's haunting Cinema of provocation, for here is an auteur who writes his films as novels before making them into movies. Intellectual rigor comes with the territory. Get your thinking caps on.
