ColeSmithey.comCatherine Zeta Jones's eminent allure, and Antonio Banderas's leading man charms are reduced to mere furnishings for an ostensibly child-friendly adventure movie. Tedious stunt sequences, endless sword fight, and too many brutal murders, come gratis.

In the years since the superior "Mask Of Zorro," Alejandro (Banderas) and Elena (Zeta-Jones) have married. The couple now have a 10-year-old boy named Joaquin (Adrian Alonso). The year is 1950 and the impoverished people of the California territory are under threat by a group of greedy land barons led by a French villain named Armand (Rufus Sewell) who co-opts Elena as the female object of his romantic desires.

The film is poorly paced, and too long for the squishy demands of the lightweight material.

"The Legend Of Zorro" is mildly entertaining but too gimmicky and glib about its use of lethal violence to be an enjoyable experience.

Rated PG. 131 mins.
