A folksy story about a poor disenfranchised girl with a lost dog, "Wendy and Lucy" is auteur Kelly Reichardt's similarly simplistic follow-up to her overrated debut "Old Joy."
Stuck with a broken down car in Portland on her way to find work in Alaska, Wendy (embodied by Michelle Williams) gets caught shoplifting dog food at a local grocery store and things go downhill from there.
As a muted commentary on the reality of living as a refugee in one's own country, the film doesn't delve far enough into the relationships of its enigmatic character.
Still, Michelle Williams's thoughtful performance is reason enough to see this mediocre minimalist independent drama.
Not Rated. 80 mins.
