Secondhand Lions
Haley Joel Osment puts puberty to use in this fluffy drama about a boy abandoned by his selfish mother (Kyra Sedgwick) to live with his eccentric great uncles (Robert Duval and Michael Caine), who keep a fortune in cash from their wild youth hidden in their secluded Texas house. Hub (Duval) and Garth (Caine) take Walter (Osment) under their wing and share with him their exotic stories of romance, war, adventure and lessons of manhood when they aren't satisfying their tastes for the arcane, like having a giraffe and a lion delivered to their property. Duval and Caine make the film watchable, but there's too much gunplay for the movie to truly be the child-friendly entertainment that it pretends.
Rated PG-13. 99 mins (C) (Two Stars)
