Not as crass, or as sophisticated, as the Apatow-themed humor that it aspires to, "She's Out of My League" succeeds on the strength of its gawky leading man.
Recognizable for his roles in "Knocked Up" and "Tropic Thunder," Canadian-born comedian Jay Baruchel combines humble innocence with a knowing command of comic chops to inspire heartfelt laughs.
Baruchel's geeky Kirk is a live-at-home Pittsburgh TSA inspector with a cruel family of morons, and a mean ex-girlfriend, who never miss an opportunity to punch holes in his already weak self-esteem.
Kirk gets a major pride infusion when Molly (Alice Eve), a beautiful lawyer-turned-party-planner takes a shine to Kirk's well-meaning persona.
The filmmakers throw in a couple of gratuitous gross-out scenes to add some grit to their romantic soup, but Baruchel soldiers through the humiliations with a likable charm that makes Eve's attraction for a guy beneath her social station seem logical.
"She's Out of My League" won't knock your socks off, but sometimes it's okay to leave the socks on.
Rated R. 105 mins.
