"Fast Five" is a silly action movie. The film's ten anti-hero thieves of various cultural backgrounds, culled together from the past four "Fast/Furious" films, reunite. If you're a stickler for plot holes, Dennis Lin's third installment in the franchise will trip you up with a metronomic regularity. But if you're a glutton for big-screen fast-twitch action that takes your breath away, "Fast Five" is the kind of gnarly blockbuster you'll want to savor on a giant IMAX screen — don't bother with the mini-IMAX variety.
Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, and the too-hot-for-her-own-good Jordana Brewster lead the charge in Rio de Janeiro where they plan to steal one hundred million dollars in cold cash from the city's ruthless kingpin Reyas (Joaquim de Almeida).
They need to assemble a team of their ole buddies that include the likes of Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Sung Kang, and Gal Gadot reprising their glamorous roles. White-knuckle action sequences, like one especially spectacular bridge-dive from a convertible 1966 Corvette Grand Sport, arrive with gut-wrenching effectiveness.
The filmmakers make the most of Rio's dichotomy between slums and ritzy beach areas. No apologies are made. If you think you don't care about fast cars, loads of t and a, bulging muscles, and more car-crashing action than you can imagine; think again.
Rated PG-13. 130 mins.
