John Carpenter's 1994 finale to his Apocalypse Trilogy is a no-holds-barred blitzkrieg of horror that will have you watching the movie a second time just to confirm that you did indeed see what you think you saw.
Following trilogy predecessors "The Thing" (1982) and "Prince of Darkness" (1987), "In The Mouth of Madness" follows insurance investigator John Trent (Sam Neil).
Trent's assignment is to solve the disappearance of Sutter Cane (think Stephen King), a horror novelist who has gone missing before turning in his latest manuscript to his publisher.
Cane's books are suddenly inspiring their readers to kill.
Axes are nasty weapons.
Publicity stunt? Perhaps.
Mass murder and mass suicides accompany the monsters that rise up in this prescient if overlooked horror movie.
Madness is the prevailing theme at play; John Carpenter runs with it as far as the imagination can reach.
Get out the popcorn, and prepared to be scared, or even scarred.
Rated R. 95 mins.
