Elvis Costello: “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace Love And Understanding”

by

Elvis Costello’s version of Nick Lowe’s song became an anthem for my generation in the late ’70s and early ’80s because of Elvis’s pithy phrasing that gave a jaundiced eye toward war, violence, and physical and emotional abuse of every kind. There’s nothing naïve about it. The song is a call-to-arms of the best possible means and intent. Note that there is no question mark at the end of the title.
