AREA 23A TO RELEASE “HELLBOUND?”
IN THEATERS LATE SEPTEMBER 2012
Leading Theologians, Authors, Social Commentators
Offer In-Depth Look at the Concept of Hell
New York, NY – As if the highly politicized debate on faith couldn’t get any hotter, film distributor Area 23a plans to release Hellbound?-a feature-length documentary that takes a critical look at the traditional Christian doctrine of hell-in theaters across North America this September. The announcement was made today by Area 23a principals Kirt Eftekhar and Richard Abramowitz.
“This is an incredibly ambitious film that challenges basic assumptions about hell and the afterlife, two topics most people have pondered at some point in their lives,” commented Eftekhar. “Our hope is that the campaign for Hellbound? will provide moviegoers and communities with a one-of-kind opportunity to get involved in the hell debate, in the context of a cinema event/forum.”
Hellbound? will hit theaters across the country through a combination of traditional theatrical runs in major metropolitan areas and special event screenings. The much-anticipated film features interviews with an eclectic group of high profile authors, theologians, pastors, social commentators, musicians and yes, even, exorcists.
Written and directed by award-winning screenwriter Kevin Miller, the film also marks Miller’s directorial debut. His previous credits include the documentaries Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, with Ben Stein; Sex+Money, spOILed, With God On Our Side and several other projects.
“Throughout history, Christians have disagreed about a lot of things: racial and gender equality, birth control, abortion, homosexuality, the list goes on,” says Miller. “During these debates, certain doctrines tend to become a litmus test to determine ‘insiders’ and ‘outsiders’ and that’s certainly the case right now regarding the doctrine of hell. Hellbound? is my attempt to get to the bottom of the current debate, to find out why it’s so contentious and to discover the implications of this dispute for both Christians and those watching from a distance.”
Miller has no illusions about the controversy this film might cause. “No matter what you believe about hell, this film is definitely going to push your buttons. But I see that as a healthy thing. Rather than just stir people up though, I hope Hellbound? will provoke informed discussions about what we believe about hell and why. I also hope it will get people to take a second look at the impact their beliefs have on the world at large.”
Production on Hellbound? took place in more than two-dozen cities across the United States, Canada and Denmark throughout 2011. It was produced by Miller’s production company, Kevin Miller XI Productions Inc.
