Ingrid Bergman (“Casablanca”) is ravishing in her first English-speaking film as Anita Hoffman, a piano teacher to the young daughter of acclaimed concert violinist Holger Brandt (Leslie Howard). The married violinist becomes so smitten with Bergman’s Anita that he abandons his wife, and invites the much younger ingenue to accompany him on his next musical tour in Italy.
Beauty, style, lust, music, and travel; what more do you want?
Cinematographer Gregg Toland (”Citizen Kane”) was nominated for an Academy Award for his fantastic black-and-white work under Gregory Ratoff’s direction. A remake of the similarly titled Swedish film,“Intermezzo” is a classic tale of adulterous romance from 1939.
“Intermezzo” is a great window into Ingrid Bergman’s highly developed talents at just 24-years-old. They don’t make ’em like this fine film, or Ingrid Bergman, anymore.
