ColeSmithey.comFrench auteur Agnes Jaoui creates an effortless pastiche of modern French existence with this light comedy that plants the high heels of its leading character into fertile soil.

Jaoui also acts in the role of Agathe Villanova, a provincial politician and feminist author who keeps her boyfriend Michel (played by Jaoui's real-life spouse Jean-Pierre Bacri) at arm's length. Agathe connects with her sister Florence (Pascale Arbillot) at their childhood home to sort out their deceased mother's estate. There, Karim (Jamel Debbouze), the French-Algerian son of Florence's housekeeper Mimouna (Mimouna Hadji), asks to interview Agathe for a television documentary he hopes to make.

Karim gets Michel to operate the camera; Michel's ineptitude at the task adds to the humorous undercurrent that ebbs and flows freely in this nuanced work.

The promised rain of the film's title arrives to melt away the affectations of characters whom we recognize as spirited people attempting to communicate in and around rigid French societal constructs.

"Let it Rain" is a perfect example of the kind of sophisticated blend of drama and light comedy audiences have come to expect from this talented filmmaker with a carefully honed sense of dramatic expression.
