NEW YORK, NY – December 11, 2013 - Raro Video is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release of MANY WARS AGO, a 1970 Italian drama directed by Francesco Rosi, set in Northern Italy during World War I. This edition from Raro Video is digitally restored, in collaboration with the National Cinematheque and The Turin National Museum under the supervision of the director.

The Blu-ray and DVD are set to street on January 7, 2014, with a pre-order date of December 10, 2013. The Blu-ray SRP is $34.95 and the DVD SRP is $29.95. Special features will include a "before and after" restoration, interview with the director, new and improved subtitle translation, and a fully illustrated booklet on the genesis and production of the film.

In Northern Italy, WWI has turned into a bloody stalemate. Bogged down in their trenches on a barren highland, the men of an Italian infantry division have been given one objective: retake a commanding height from the enemy. Unfortunately, the tactical ingenuity of general Leone, the unpopular division commander, consists of supplementing frontal attacks against machine-guns with medieval fighting schemes. His dispirited troops must be prodded with ever harsher measures into storming the Austrian positions. As casualties mount, indignation spreads amongst the rank and file. Disturbed by the decisions of his superiors, lieutenant Sassu is progressively led to question the purpose of the war and to reconsider where his real duties lie.

Adapted from Emilio Lussu's 1938 novel "Un anno sull'altopiano" (A Year on the Plateau), MANY WARS AGO tackles an anti-militaristic message from the soldiers' point of view similar to Stanley Kubrick's Paths of Glory in its depiction of the foolish decisions of the officer class. Rosi himself described the film as showing "the clear separation between the men who had decided to initiate the war and those who had been mobilized to fight it".
