This animated darling of this year’s Cannes Film Festival is more execution than story, but oh what exquisite execution.
Champion is quiet chubby boy living with his grandmother Madame Souza and his dog Bruno in a ramshackle house facing elevated railway tracks.
Madame Souza supports Champion’s obsession with bicycle racing by coaching him to competition level.
But when Champion is kidnapped by the French Mafia during the Tour de France, Madame Souza dauntlessly searches for her boy with the aid of three former music-hall singers from the ‘30s the “Triplets of Belleville.”
Writer/director Sylvain Chomet uses a loose style that embraces French idiosyncrasies and traditions. This is an animated movie to fall in love with.
